Heart Failure in Barbados
Seth* was leading a group of university students on a trip to Barbados. While on a hike with a group of students, he began to feel nauseous. He started to vomit and asked one of the students to call local emergency services. Upon arriving at the hospital, Seth’s colleague Anthony* reached out to their institution’s travel risk management provider, On Call International, for assistance.

On Call Steps In
Upon arriving at the hospital, Anthony spoke with On Call to discuss Seth’s symptoms. He explained that Seth was currently incapacitated and was unable to speak to us. We quickly set up a medical consultation between Seth’s treating doctor and our medical team, where it was determined Seth was suffering from heart failure as well as acute respiratory failure.

Our medical team determined Seth would need to an evacuation back to the United States for further care. Our transportation team immediately began working on arrangements for Seth’s air ambulance transfer to the closest medically-appropriate facility in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. We were in constant communication with the air ambulance team throughout the evacuation and confirmed Seth’s safe arrival at the Florida facility.

Safe Transport Home
After several weeks of treatment, our medical team determined Seth had improved enough to be transported to his home hospital in Kentucky for continuing care. We arranged a second air ambulance transfer and confirmed Seth’s safe arrival at his hospital in Kentucky. While he still had a long road of recovery ahead of him, Seth, as well as Anthony, the students, and Seth’s family, were thankful for On Call’s help during this unexpected emergency.
