Helping Travelers Every Day: Trauma in Afghanistan

From medical emergencies to security concerns—or any other travel issue big or small—here at On Call, the health and safety of the travelers we serve is our top priority. Read our latest case study for an inside look at how On Call’s Global Assistance Teams work around the clock to fulfill our mission of helping travelers in their time of need, every day:

Background:
An expatriate employee for a government contractor was in Afghanistan for a work assignment. After witnessing a traumatic event, she was hospitalized for a severe anxiety attack and was treated at a nearby U.S. military base. It was here that her doctors determined she needed further psychological testing and evaluation which could not be provided locally. Due to her high-security clearance, the expatriate was required to undergo a detailed debriefing by her employer before returning to the U.S. for long-term care and recuperation. Since transportation options were minimal, so she turned to her company’s travel risk management provider, On Call International, for help.

On Call Steps In:
The expatriate’s condition made her case very time-sensitive, and a quick evacuation to the closest debriefing facility with proper psychological care was vital. On Call worked around the clock to ensure she received seamless care while updating her employer throughout the process. On Call secured a charter flight to a debriefing facility across the country and arranged for two Rescue Nurses to accompany her on the trip. After the expatriate was evaluated and debriefed, she was ready to return home to the U.S. to recuperate. Rescue Nurses with active visas for Afghanistan were limited, but On Call was able to use its extensive resources to arrange for a nurse to pick her up at the debriefing facility.

Outcome:
The expatriate, accompanied by her Rescue Nurse, traveled home to the United States for continuing treatment with the support of her family. After the proper therapy, thanks to On Call, she was released and ready to get back to work in her U.S. office.
