Helping Travelers, Every Day: Medical Assistance for a Severe Brain Injury

Background
A traveler visiting Sierra Leone, a remote country on the southwest coast of West Africa, was driving a motorbike when he was struck by another vehicle. This accident resulted in a traumatic brain injury with an intracranial hemorrhage and clavicle fracture. The traveler was unconscious in the ICU when his wife contacted On Call International for further assistance.

On Call Steps In
On Call’s Global Response Center arranged for a consult between On Call’s Medical Team and the traveler’s treating physician in Sierra Leone. On Call’s Medical Team quickly determined that the local hospital in Sierra Leone did not have the necessary resources to properly treat the patient’s severe head injury, and therefore he would need an emergent air ambulance transfer to a different hospital with additional capabilities.

A Successful Outcome
On Call’s Global Response Center quickly coordinated the arrival of an air ambulance with a physician, nurse, and critical care equipment to the traveler’s bedside and secured admission to his receiving hospital in the United States. From there, the air ambulance team remained with the traveler until he arrived safely in his destination for further care.
