On Call in Action: Zip Lining Accident

Whether you’re traveling for business, school, or pleasure, it’s safe to say that things don’t always go as planned. (Good thing you always remember to pack your On Call card!) But here’s the thing: unless you’ve actually experienced a travel emergency (a broken leg, lost prescription, stolen passport, or even a legal mix-up), it’s hard to imagine how travel assistance could really come in handy or even save your life. Not to worry – tune in each month to see how travelers just like you turn to On Call International every day for help with their travel emergencies, both big and small.

Zip Line

This Month: Susan* and her husband Theodore* were celebrating their anniversary week in Costa Rica. They were excited to try zip lining for the first time in the rainforest. Just a few feet from the end of the course, Susan realized she wasn’t slowing down. The brakes failed before the attendant could stop her from crashing into a tree. As they rode to the hospital, Theodore began to question the quality of medical care in such a remote area. Feeling uneasy, he reached out to their travel risk management provider, On Call International, for help.

On Call to the Rescue…

Once they arrived at the local clinic, On Call explained our hospital vetting process to Theodore and how we already begun researching the facility’s capabilities to treat Susan’s condition. Since Susan had broken several bones and was also suffering from a concussion, we recommended she be moved to a larger hospital with English-speaking physicians.

We coordinated Susan’s transfer, keeping in close contact with her and Theodore throughout the course of her journey. We monitored her care and, after a couple of days, Susan was cleared to travel home to recover. We made arrangements for a nurse to meet her at the hospital so that she could receive medical care during her flight. We also helped Theodore work with the airline so he could sit with his wife during the flight.

A Safe Return…

Susan and Theodore arrived home safely, thankful to have On Call by their side during such a frightening ordeal.  Although they may be taking a break from zip lining for now, they are looking forward to their next travel adventure.
