On Call in Action: Throat Infection in the Bahamas

Whether you’re traveling for business, school, or pleasure, it’s safe to say that things don’t always go as planned. (Good thing you always remember to pack your On Call card!) But here’s the thing: unless you’ve actually experienced a travel emergency (a broken leg, lost prescription, stolen passport, or even a legal mix-up), it’s hard to imagine how travel assistance could really come in handy or even save your life. Not to worry–tune in each month to see how travelers just like you turn to On Call International every day for help with their travel emergencies, both big and small.

This Month: Family Trip Nearly Derailed by Illness…

John*, a father of two from Seattle, was headed to the Bahamas for some sun, fun and relaxation with his wife and kids. Unfortunately, their trip took a turn for the worse when John got a sore throat shortly after arriving in Nassau. The next day his throat felt terrible, so he began taking over-the-counter medication for the pain. Soon, John had a high fever–he could drink liquids, but it was painful to swallow food. John decided it was time to call On Call International for help.

On Call to the Rescue…

On Call International connected John with a nurse then scheduled a same-day appointment at a local physician’s office. On Call guaranteed payment on behalf of John’s U.S. medical insurer so he had immediate access to care. At his appointment, the local doctor verified that John’s tonsils were enlarged and reddened and that he had an infection.

The physician prescribed a broad-spectrum antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drug, which John’s wife picked up at a local pharmacy recommended by On Call. Because his infection was unusually severe, On Call’s medical team felt that John was not fit to return home as scheduled (acute throat infections can affect the middle ear and changes in air pressure may damage the eardrum). On Call helped John and his family work with the airline to reschedule their flight so he could fly home safely a couple days later.

Home Safe and Sound…

John recovered soon after arriving home and was thankful that he had On Call International’s help in dealing with his illness so far from home.
